Looking for information on the Web? The sites listed below are some of the IPL's favorite general Internet search engines and catalogs. All the top Internet search services are constantly growing, changing, and improving. None of them, however, are comprehensive. When searching, use a variety of different tools. To locate additional services, see the All-in-One Search Page, Search.com or the Yahoo page titled Searching the Web. Also see Search Engine Watch, which has news and tips relating to WWW search engines, including tips for searching and tips for webmasters who want to make their pages more accessible.
AltaVista is extremely fast and comprehensive. It searches the entire full-text of web pages and Usenet articles. Users can search for exact phrases, require or prohibit words, search within the title field of an HTML document, search for documents that contain a link to a particular URL, use wildcards, and employ case sensitivity. The advanced query allows for the use of Boolean operators (AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR) and lets users limit searches by date. An additional feature live topics allows users to refine a search by selecting additional topics from a list provided.
Pros: Very powerful and extensive database that can be power-searched from page one.
Cons: Too many hits may overwhelm novice searchers.
The Argus Clearinghouse is a concise archive of "value-added topical guides which identify, describe, and evaluate Internet-based information resources." These guides are evaluated, rated and indexed by category. They can also be searched for keywords, titles and authors. The Clearinghouse also offers an Internet searching center with more links and information about searching other places on the web.
Pros: Well-organized and well-categorized without much extraneous text; ratings system is clear and useful
Cons: Categories are organized into long lists of links that can be tough to browse
Deja News is the only searcher dedicated exclusively to searching Usenet newsgroups and is a great way to find esoteric information even too arcane for the World Wide Web. Users can search the Usenet as far back as March, 1995 with a simple interface.
A very customizable Power Search page is also available where users can create their own query filters. Deja News also provides a great deal of basic information about newsgroups, newsreading and posting and allows users to post from their site.
Pros: Super powerful, customizable and fast. Useful information on Usenet for new users.
Cons: Hard to limit by topic or user. Usenet information can be erratic.
Excite is a feature-rich web site offering the benefits of both a powerful search engine and a well-organized index. Users can search for web pages, Usenet posts and recent news stories from Reuters in plain English or by keywords. If you like a search result, excite also lets you say "give me more documents like this one." Additional features include a catalog of reviewed sites, Newstracker to help you keep on top of your news, a talk room, and city.net with guides to over 4,000 destinations worldwide.
Pros: Many options for finding information with customizable features
HotBot is a fast, comprehensive, robot-based web index run by Wired. It is perhaps the largest web index and lists over 35 million documents.
The HotBot user interface supports basic searching features, such as Boolean operators with nesting.
It also allows users to do weighted searches or to limit searches by date, location, media (image, text, sound, &etc.), or page type.
Pros: Large index, updated weekly. Good navigational aids.
Cons: Large images slow down access and waste screen space. Interface is somewhat busy and overly fashionable.
Magellan bills itself as an Internet guide, and this is where its strengths lie. It offers the options of searching sites it has rated and reviewed, or its entire database. Within the reviewed sites, users can opt to only search for green light sites, which are those determined to have no adult content. Users can also browse Magellan starting with such topics as daily living and spirituality. An added neat feature is the search voyeur which displays "20 randomly selected real-time searches" that users are currently conducting.
Pros: Site rating system is comprehensive and useful for selecting quality sites. Green light feature is unique among major search engines.
Cons: Database is far from comprehensive. Browsing by topic can be cumbersome.
Yahoo is deservedly the most widely-used Internet catalog. In contrast
to the search engines listed above, which use computer programs which scour
the Internet for Web pages, Yahoo catalogs sites manually, depending largely
on user submissions. The front page is an alphabetical list of fourteen
broad subject areas which are then subdivided into smaller categories. Users
can browse the hierarchical structure, use a search
engine that searches the URLs, titles and comments within Yahoo, or
use both features in tandem. Current news, stock quotes, sport
scores, and city
maps are available as well as regional Yahoos and an excellent search
site for kids, Yahooligans.
Pros: Easiest search page for new users. Very
well-organized.
Cons: Can be hard to differentiate between categories
and sites.
